Licensing models for LiveDocx

by Björn Meyer 9. February 2009 09:45

We are having a terrific feedback on our new product LiveDocx from people using many different platforms: ASP.NET, PHP, Java and others. But there is one common question:

How is LiveDocx licensed?

Currently, LiveDocx 1.0 is in beta stage. We are testing the server load, our merge engine and collecting the feedback from all users to make LiveDocx still better. At this stage, you can test the LiveDocx service for free, but only for testing purposes.

As soon as our beta is over, there will be 2 options:
  1. A small monthly/annual fee to use the LiveDocx service on our servers depending
on how many documents you need to create per month.
  2. You purchase the LiveDocx web service software and install it on your own servers.

We need your feedback on these models. What do you prefer?

Typical application for LiveDocx

by Björn Meyer 29. January 2009 10:00

At first glance, it is not obvious what LiveDocx does and what you can do with it. In the next blog entries, I am going to describe more detailed under which circumstances the service-oriented architecture of LiveDocx can be used.

Consider this typical first scenario:

A company uses a modern office application to handle it's customers, suppliers, products and to create quotes, invoices or other business correspondence. This application is able to create documents that can be printed locally or on a network printer. Additionally, the long-sighted company has implemented a web module for this application to connect the sales people on the road. But how do they create Adobe PDF quotes and how do they print them? Typically, they print documents when they are back in the office or they have to ask their backoffice to do this job for them.

Documents should be created and printed on a central server and all applications should have access to this service.

Using LiveDocx, all different applications in a company have access to a central service to create these documents. Independently from their platform, programming language or architecture, applications can use LiveDocx to create professional documents on-the-fly.

The web application that is used by the salesperson simply sends the data to a LiveDocx server to create an Adobe PDF document. This document can be printed or sent as email to the addressee. Additionally, the PDF can be archived automatically in one process.

The main advantage is that the used templates to create an invoice or a quote are stored in a central location. That entails that all processes are using the same and up-to-date templates with the correct company address or the current logo of the company.

1500 free test accounts - Get yours now

by Björn Meyer 29. January 2009 09:23

To start LiveDocx smoothly, we have decided to provide 1500 free test accounts for the beta version of LiveDocx. This amount of traffic and workload is a typical scenario in an enterprise-wide LiveDocx server where different applications and users are generating documents on a central server.

What can you do when you have an account?

After you created an account, you can upload your MS Word DOCX, DOC or RTF templates to your personal and protected template folder. The templates contain fields that are being merged with data during the merge process. These templates can be used with the LiveDocx API in your application. You simply need to specify the template, pass the merge data in order to retrieve a print-ready Adobe PDF document.

Additionally, you can share created documents using the LiveDocx API. These shared documents can be viewed in the Shared Documents section of LiveDocx.com. It is possible to create a unique link for these shared documents which can be send to other users. They have access to your shared document and can view it on a seperate web page in the LiveDocx Document Viewer.

Welcome to LiveDocx

by Björn Meyer 28. January 2009 17:02

LiveDocx - create documents on-the-fly

We just released our latest member of the family of word processing components: LiveDocx!

LiveDocx enables developers - using any programming language - to merge MS Word compatible word processing templates with any type of textual data. The resulting word processing document can be saved as a DOCX, DOC, RTF or Adobe PDF file.

This kind of functionality is useful when - for example - you wish to generate invoices from a web-site store or to create documents in a SOA environment.

In such application, a template, which stores the layout of the invoice can be generated in Microsoft Word or Open Office. A developer can then pass the data, which should appear in the invoice, to LiveDocx. On invoking the SOAP based service, the developer receives back a word processing document in the specified format (commonly PDF).
